The West Belfast Historical Society was established in 1974 as a result of a series of local public history lectures based on Belfast and its surrounding areas. The West Belfast Historical Society has been responsible for providing public lectures on a monthly basis ever since.
The Historical Society is located at the Falls Park Pavillion Premises (Falls Road Belfast) on the second Friday of Each Month (except July & August) from 7. 30 pm to 9. 30 pm approx.
Our members and public attendees particularly value the expert local knowledge our public lectures provide.
The West Belfast Historical Society was founded by Fred Heatley, Clement & Maureen Murray, Hugh Crozier, Brian Barry, Vincent Burke, Maureen Smith and Monsignor Michael Dallat.
The Current Committee consisting of 11 Society Members is headed by Patrick Greer (Chairperson), Bridie Bradley (Secretary) and Stephen Goss (Treasurer).
The Honorary president of the Society is Dr Eamon Phoenix.
The West belfast Historical Society is neither political nor sectarian in its outlook being open to all who have an interest in local history.
The main objects and aims of the Society are to:
1) To promote local history and to keep the memories of those who went before us alive in the minds of the people of today and for future generations to ponder over.
2) To record on paper & film or other illustrations of all social, economic or other events associated with that area of Belfast lying west of the River Lagan
3) The Preservation, where possible, of what we consider worth preserving of the fabric of our city.
4) The encouragement amongst people to see their city as an interested stranger might: its good and its bad points
If any of the above are of interest to you please come along to our meetings and learn more about your local heritage.
